The Charity

Proceeds from the Charleston James Island Connector Run benefit the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation, a local charity that awards annual scholarships to students with physical disabilities making “Education Within Reach” for South Carolina undergraduates pursuing a college education despite physical limitations. Since 1999, the Foundation has raised more than $1,000,000 and awarded 165 scholarships to  Lowcountry students

The Race

Run or walk one of South Carolina’s most scenic routes. Overlooking the beautiful Ashley River and historic Downtown Charleston, this fun run/walk goes across the James Island Connector and finishes with a post-race party in Cannon Park! This year brings the Charleston Running Club on to manage the race.

More than a race, a movement.

To date, the James Island Connector run, in partnership with the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation, has awarded more than 165 scholarships to students with disabilities at the College of Charleston, Charleston Southern University, the Citadel, Trident Technical College and the Art Institute of Charleston. Help us award even more scholarships by signing up for our race!

About The Race

The top 5 male and female finishers for the 10K and 5K Run will receive cash awards. The top prize will be $250; 2nd place, $150; 3rd place, $100; 4th place, $75; and 5th place, $50. First place male and female Master and Grandmaster in the 10K and 5K will receive $100. The top 3 male and female finishers in each age group of the 10K and 5K running category will also receive an award.

The Gavalas Kolanko Foundation (GKF) is a 501 (c)(3) public charity established to help students with disabilities reach their secondary educational goals.

In 2019, the Charleston Running Club (CRC) assumed management of the James Island Connector Run. Established in 1977, the Charleston Running Club was created by runners for runners, exists for the purpose of the promotion, encouragement, organization and education of running and running activities for sport, recreation, competition and health in the local community. CRC plans to continue the long support of the GKF and maintain the same high quality event that participants have loved returning to every year.
